SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State University athletic department announced today that the Aztec football team will travel to Columbia, Mo., to face the University of Missouri on Sept. 18, 2010. The game fills the void left when San Diego State and the University of Nevada mutually agreed to move their game scheduled for that date back to Sept. 10, 2016.
"It is always exciting to play a team from an automatic qualifying BCS conference," SDSU senior associate athletic director Don Oberhelman said. "Missouri has a rich tradition in football and is one of the premier programs in the country. We look forward to showcasing our football program on this stage."
A one-game agreement, the contest at Missouri will mark the third meeting between the football programs, with the Tigers claiming wins in the previous two encounters. In 1979, SDSU opened an 8-3 campaign with a 45-15 loss at Missouri. The Tigers returned to San Diego the following season ranked 12th in the country and defeated the Aztecs, 31-7.
Missouri is currently 6-4 and coming off a 38-12 victory at Kansas State. The Tigers, who were nationally-ranked this season after opening the campaign with victories in their first four games, have won the Big 12 North title the last two campaigns, posting 12 wins in 2007 and 10 in 2008. Missouri ended the 2007 regular season as the top-ranked team in the country before ending the year ranked fourth following a 38-7 victory over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. With six wins this season, the Tigers are bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive year.
The game will mark the school's first trip to the Central time zone for a non-conference game since the Aztecs played at Wisconsin on Sept. 16, 2006. It will mark the first encounter with a member of the Big 12 Conference since playing at 17th-ranked Colorado on Sept. 7, 2002.
Next season will mark the 34th consecutive year that San Diego State has faced at least one team that currently resides in an automatic qualifying BCS conference. In addition, Missouri will mark SDSU's 34th game against an automatic qualifying BCS conference since 1997.
With the announcement, San Diego State's non-conference football schedule is complete for the 2010 season.
