TEAM NOTES
* SDSU won its ninth straight home game vs. non-conference opponents and 10th in a row vs. unranked non-conference foes.
* San Diego State posted its fifth consecutive season-opening victory and its sixth in its last eight openers.
* As a Division I program, the Aztecs are now 22-18 in season-opening games and 57-32 all time.
* Steve Fisher improved his season-opening record to 16-3 and 9-2 while at San Diego State.
* The Aztecs extended their winning streak over San Diego universities to 13 games.
* SDSU improved its record to 11-0 all time vs. UC San Diego.
* San Diego State started D.J. Gay, Kelvin Davis, Malcolm Thomas, Brian Carlwell and Kawhi Leonard. Besides Gay and Davis, the other three were starting for the first time as Aztecs. Davis, meanwhile, started his first game since Feb. 13, 2008, and just his sixth overall as an Aztec.
* The 25-point victory is the largest winning margin in a season-opening game since a 30-point triumph over Long Beach State on Nov. 21, 2003 (W, 74-44).
* San Diego State is now 29-2 in its last 31 games dating back to the 2006-07 campaign when scoring 70 or more points in a game.
* Four of the Aztecs' top-5 scorers (M. Thomas - 20, C. Tapley - 11, B. Carlwell - 9, K. Leonard - 8) did not play for San Diego State last season. Kelvin Davis was the team's third-leading scorer with 10.
* The Aztecs shot 59.3 percent from the field, including 64.3 percent in the second half. It's SDSU's best shooting day since hitting 60.0 percent of its shots vs. San Diego on Nov. 19, 2007.
* SDSU dominated UCSD in the paint and on the break. The Aztecs held a 46-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 10-0 edge in fastbreak points.

Malcolm Thomas (Game-high 20 points, game-high 9 rebounds, game-high 2 blocked shots)
* Scored a game-high 20 points and posted his fourth career 20-point game ... It is his first such game since scoring 21 at Pacific on Dec. 8, 2007, when he played for Pepperdine ... The game marked his first for San Diego State; his first game at Pepperdine resulted in a 22-point effort at Oregon ... He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, giving him nine or more rebounds in six of his last seven Division I games.
Kelvin Davis (10 points, 3 rebounds, career-high 3 assists, 1 steal)
* Davis started his first game since Feb. 13, 2008, and produced his first double-figure scoring game since posting 15 at TCU on Feb. 9, 2008 ... He connected on a pair of three pointers for the first time since March 1, 2008, vs. Colorado State ... His three assists matches a career high and represents his most since Dec. 27, 2004, vs. Alabama State.
Chase Tapley (11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, game-high tying 2 steals.)
* Tapley reached double figures in scoring in his first official game as an Aztec ... He was one of seven player to grab at least three rebounds ... Shared game-high honors with two steals (B. Carlwell, D.J. Gay).
Kawhi Leonard (8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Leonard was one of eight players to shoot 50 percent or better from the field en route to his eight points ... Pulled down eight rebounds, one short of matching Malcolm Thomas' game-high of nine ... Was also one assist shy of tying D.J. Gay for game-high honors in assists.
Bryan Horton (4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist)
* Horton set a career high with four points and matched his career best with one rebound and one assist ... He also played a personal-best 12 minutes.
