San Diego State Opens 40th Div. I Season with Three Games in Six Days; Aztecs Start Quest for Fifth Straight Postseason Appearance on Saturday vs. UCSD
Having secured a third consecutive berth in the postseason for the first time in the Division I era and the first time since the 1939, San Diego State opens its 89th season of basketball, its 40th at the Division I level and 11th under national championship head coach Steve Fisher on Saturday afternoon against UC San Diego, a Division II program that returns nine letterwinners off a team that won 17 games a year ago.

Game time is set for 2 p.m. PT at Viejas Arena on the San Diego State campus. The game can be heard in Southern California on AM 600 KOGO. The early start is to accommodate fans that want to watch the Aztecs football team in their home finale against Wyoming on Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium (7 p.m. PT).

Saturday marks the first of three games in six days, which will test the Aztecs with an NBA-type schedule to open the season. After facing the Tritons in the opener, SDSU will leave the next day for Moraga, Calif., for a Monday night nationally televised game against Saint Mary's. The Aztecs will then return home to get ready for a Thursday clash with a second consecutive member of the West Coast Conference, Santa Clara.

* SDSU has been dominant against non-conference opponents at home recently. The Aztecs have won eight straight and 15 of their last 17 vs. teams at home that also reside outside of the Mountain West Conference.
* San Diego State has won nine straight at home vs. unranked non-conference foes.
* The Aztecs, in general, have been really good at home. Entering Saturday's tilt, SDSU is 51-8 in its last 59 home games.
* Since the start of the 2005-06 season, San Diego State's winning percentage in home games is 85.5 percent, which is the 37th-best success rate in Division I during that time (Stats, Inc).
* SDSU is one of 31 Division I teams to have won 20 or more games in four straight seasons and ranks 33rd nationally in most wins (92) since 2005-06 and 35th for highest winning percentage (.681) during that same time frame (Stats, Inc.).
* San Diego State has won its last 12 games vs. teams from San Diego County (Point Loma Nazarene, San Diego, UC San Diego) inside Viejas Arena. The Aztecs haven't dropped a home game against a San Diego university since Dec. 9, 2000.
