SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's two entries in the Novice 8= category at the 2009 San Diego Crew Classic finished first ("A" boat) and second ("B" boat) in their race at the annual event held on Mission Bay in San Diego on Sunday. The win came against other local entries from the University of San Diego and UC San Diego.
Members of the winning SDSU Novice "A" boat included Marissa Caldarella (cox), Paige Funk (stroke), Carly Schlocker (seven), Lauren Bischoff (six), Chelsea Canha (five), Katie Sanders (four), Mallory Scarpello (three), Lily Kurkjian (two), Kayla McKenna (bow).
The Aztecs' entry in the Novice 4+ race finished second to USD.
In the Varsity Collegiate 8+, SDSU's three entries were the only boats in the race as University of San Diego withdrew due to illness of several of its team members. The Aztec "A". "B", and "C" boats finished in that order.
The San Diego Crew Classic was the final regatta of the Aztecs' fall season and head coach Jen Zebroski is pleased with what she has seen of her team over the past two months.
"Overall I think we had a great fall," commetned Zebroski. "Our novice rowers did extremely well in every race in which they were entered and the varisty made progress throughout the fall as well.
"We'll contine training and I'm already looking forward to the spring and the San Diego City Championships."
The Aztecs will kick off their spring season with that local regatta, which will involve boats from USD and UC San Diego, on Saturday, February 27 at Mission Bay.
