SAN DIEGO -
Cal Baptist-San Diego State Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher:
Opening Statement:
"We'll have a lot to teach to and talk about as we come back and look at the tape tomorrow. This was good for us. We went against a team that is very well coached, and is a very good basketball team that will win a lot of games in their league at their level. I saw enough good things to say if we stick with it and get our guys healthy that we will be a very good basketball team. I saw a lot of things that concerned me, that will allow us to break down the film and teach to. I thought that Tyrone (Shelley), when we were struggling, got some balls off the rim and rebounded the basketball. Tyrone finds ways to score; 7-of-9 from the field, and he needs to continue to do that. D.J. (Gay) made shots when they ducked behind on that high ball screen. I think this will be good for us as we come back. We turned the ball over too much and it led to too many easy baskets. Hopefully we'll get some of these walking-wounded healthy, and be prepared with a number of bodies we can throw at Point Loma (Nazarene) next Tuesday.
On the game:
"I think they had 12 baskets at halftime and I think at least eight of them were layups. They had 10 offensive rebounds for baskets. You have to guard hard and smart. And we gave them too many easy points. That's a credit to them to some degree. We have to stick a body on a guy, we have to get a rebound when a shot goes up and we can't turn it over that leads to a layup. And you have to fight."
San Diego State Sophomore Tyrone Shelley
On how it felt to be back on the court after a year-long layoff:
"It felt good to actually be able to play a full game with referees and a team. I felt we played good tonight and everybody stepped up on our team. [Cal Baptist] was a great team. I think they went up 12 on a 12-0 run, but we stuck to it, stuck with the gameplan and battled through it. So it felt good to get back out there."
San Diego State Junior D.J. Gay
On the 12-0 run Cal Baptist went on to start the game:
"Yeah, we definetely took a punch right from the beginning, but I think that thats something we needed. Maybe a couple of us was on the high-horse and that was something we needed, to fight back. It was definitely adversity, and we know we have to come out strong next time. We can't underestimate or just think its going to be a cake walk. That was a good team, but I dont think the 12-0 [run] is something that should have happened. So we definitely have to learn from it. Like Coach said, we willwatch film and see what went wrong."
