Aztec Men's Tennis Competes in ITA All-American Qualifying

SAN DIEGO - It was a tough day for San Diego State at the 2009 D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American qualifying event in Tulsa, Okla.

Achim Ceban, seeded 18th in the 128-player field, lost in the second round of the event, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Oklahoma's Costin Pavel. Ceban had advanced to the round of 64 by rallying from a one-set deficit in Monday's first round.

Juan Gomez, SDSU's other participant in the qualifying bracket, was eliminated by 13th-seeded Shuhei Uzawa of Ohio State, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round.

Tuesday marked the first day of play in the qualifying round of the 64-team doubles tournament. The Aztecs had two doubles teams in the event. Tenth-seeded Ceban and Gomez dropped an 8-6 decision to Adrian Forberg and Tucker Vorster of Mississippi.

On the other half of the bracket, Florida State's Clint Bowles and Andres Bucaro eliminated San Diego State's Jose Sierra and Giovanni Vaglietti, 8-3.

Qualifying at the ITA All-American event continues on Wednesday.
