Aztec redshirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.) won medalist honors at the two-day, 54-hole Firestone Grill College Invitational Tuesday in Nipomo, Calif. Morris claimed the title by four strokes with a six-under-par 207, including 16 birdies, at the par-71, 6,810-yard Monarch Dunes Golf Club.
Morris held a slim, one-stroke lead after 36 holes Monday over North Dakota's Pat Thomas, but posted his second, sub-70 round on Tuesday to cruise to a four-stroke win over Cal Poly's Bryan Pierce and Pace Johnson, who were tied at two-under-211.
The title is the first of Morris' career and his two-day total of 207, was a career-best at a 54-hole event by 13 strokes.
Morris, along with teammates Tom Berry, Colin Featherstone and Evan Emerick, were competing as individuals at the tournament, which also included teams from Cal Poly, Holy Names, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Baptist, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State San Marcos and North Dakota.
Berry, a true freshman, tied for fourth place with a two-over 215, including a hole in one on the 121-yard third hole. Featherstone, meanwhile, ended up at seven-over 220, bolstered by an opening round 67 to tie for 18th place, while Emerick was 38th with a 236.
The SDSU men's golf team will be back in action next week when the Aztecs travel to the 54-hole Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., Oct. 12-13.
