COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State goalkeeper Aubree Southwick has been named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in as many weeks. The weekly award is Southwick's second of the season and fourth of her career.
The Danville, Calif., native helped the Aztecs complete a perfect 2-0 week, which extended the team's unbeaten streak to 12 games. In the 3-1 victory over New Mexico, Southwick faced 10 shots, including five on goal, and was credited with a game-high four saves. Two days later at UNLV, the junior posted her third shutout in her last four outings as she guided SDSU to a 1-0 win. Southwick faced a total of 11 shots, with five coming on goal, and made a match-high five saves. The blanking of the Rebels was her eighth shutout of the season, which is the fourth most in a single season at San Diego State.
For the week, Southwick made nine saves, faced 21 shots and recorded a goals-against average of 0.50, while playing all 180 minutes. Her two wins ups her season total to 11, which is a new career high. Her previous career best was nine victories back in 2007.
Southwick's four career MWC player-of-the-week awards is a program record. In addition to her two this year, the goalkeeper earned MWC weekly honors twice in 2007. Since SDSU has been affiliated with a conference, Southwick matches the all-time school record for most overall player-of-the-week awards. Lori LaCoursiere was a two-time Western Athletic Conference player-of-the-week recipient in 1996 and garnered WAC weekly accolades once in 1997 and once in the Mountain West in 1999.
This is the fourth Mountain West Conference Player-of-the-Week award that San Diego State has earned in 2009, which is the most since 2004 when it also had four. Hayley Marsh garnered defensive honors on Sept. 21, while Southwick and Niki Fernandes were defensive and co-offensive honorees, respectively, last week.
The Aztecs will take their school-record-matching 12-game unbeaten streak and four-game winning streak into Fort Worth, Texas on Friday, Oct. 30, when they take on TCU. The MWC regular season finale is set for a 7 p.m. CT start.
