GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The San Diego State crew team opened its 2009-10 season by posting good results at the annual Head of the American Regatta at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif. The Aztec Novice 8+ boat, consisting of first-year rowers, finished third of 14 boats while SDSU's three entries in the varsity Collegiate 8+ event took sixth, seventh and ninth in a field of 15.
The crew of the Novice 8+ boat consisting of Marissa Caldarella (coxswain), Paige Funk, Carly Schlocker, Lauren Bischoff, Chelsea Canha, Katie Sanders, Mallory Scarpello, Lily Kurkjian and Kayla McKenna captured third place in their first race with a time of 18:42. Stanford took first in the race in a time of 18:25 with Cal second at 18:38.
In the Collegiate 8+ event, the San Diego State B boat of Casi Boyle, Jaime Hilton, Christina Mattos, Mary Anne Hinman, Darian Kimball, , Julie Moyer, Kristin Ingram, Ali Schroeder and Emma Peck (coxswain) was the Aztecs' top finisher with a sixth place finish in the field of 15. Their time of 18:11 was SDSU's best in the race which saw USC (16:43) and Cal (17:14) capture first and second respectively.
SDSU's A boat with rowers Anna Ohrstrom (stroke), Melissa Carey (six), Jenny Anderson (four), Leslie Martz (three) and Debbie Schweer (two), juniors Jenna Wood (seven) and Stefanie Krach (five) along with sophomores Laurel Stephens (bow) and Vanessa Jones (coxswain) took seventh with a time of 18:21.
The Aztec's third boat finished the race in 18:52 and was crewed by Katie Rusch, Jessica Teora, Caitlin Stanley, Kristin Guissanie, Keara Farrel, Rachel Mossinger, Alanna Call, Hillary Beard and Carolina Trawick (coxswain).
On Sunday (Oct. 25), the San Diego State rowing team will have a Collegiate Novice 8 boat participating in the ninth annual San Diego Row for Cure at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay. The event will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and will start at 7:00 a.m.
