San Diego State women's golfer Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) has sole possession of first place after two rounds Tuesday at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Wong posted a career-low 68, including six birdies, to break out of a three-way tie for first place and move to a five-stroke lead over Baylor's Hannah Burke at 7-under 137, heading into Wednesday's final 18 holes.
"Yesterday, I set a goal for myself to shoot a 68 today, and I was able to accomplish that," Wong said. "I was really focused and I committed myself to each and every shot. As a team, we wanted to get as many birdies as we could and I was happy that I was able to contribute six this round."
Wong is one of only four golfers in the 93-player field to be under par through 36 holes. She leads the tournament in both par 3 (-3) and par 4 (-2) scoring and has nine total birdies and 25 pars at the par-72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. Wong's two-round total of 137 is three strokes better than the school record for a 36-hole event held by Joanne Clingan, who carded a 140 at the 2000 Heather Farr Memorial Invitational.
Wong's day two effort helped the Aztecs move up a spot in the team standings into a tie for third with Fresno State at 19-over 595, including a season-low 295 round Tuesday. Idaho, which is ranked 32nd nationally, leads the 18-team field by one stroke over No. 35 UC Irvine.
Three of SDSU's other four golfers improved their first-round scores, including sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who is tied for 16th at 4-over 148, including a 73 on Tuesday. Junior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) moved from 74th into a tie for 59th place with teammate Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.), after firing a second-round 75. Senior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) shaved five strokes off her first-round 84, but remains in 85th place overall with a 163.
The Aztec `B' squad was also in action Tuesday in the final round of the annual Aztec Fall Classic at the par-72, 6,167-yard Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista. Freshman Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) remained the team's top performer, finishing in a tie for fifth place at 7-over 151, including a 76 in the final 18 holes. She posted five birdies, 21 pars and led the 40-golfer field in par 4 scoring at 2-over.
Besides Clark, four other Aztecs were in the top 20, including freshman Catharina Aasheim (Oslo, Norway), who tied for 13th with a 157, seniors Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) and Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), who tied for 15th at 158, and junior Kaitlen Miyajima (Wailuku, Maui), who improved by eight strokes to tie for 19th with a 162. Junior Faith DeGuzman (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) competed individually for SDSU, tying for 29th with a 26-over 170.
Cal State Northridge claimed both the team and individual titles, beating Cal Poly and UC Riverside by 15 strokes with a 19-over 595. Matador Ashlee Nagamine, meanwhile, won medalist honors on the first playoff hole over Mustang Maddy Fletcher after both finished the first 36 at 2-over 146. SDSU ended up fourth in the team race at 46-over 622, including a 305 on Tuesday.
The SDSU `A' squad concludes action at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces on Wednesday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT with a shotgun start. The Aztecs ended up 15th at the same event a year ago.
