Junior Johan Carlsson's (Gothenburg, Sweden) career-low 65 highlighted Monday's first and second rounds for the San Diego State men's golf team at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the par-71, 6,686-yard Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. Carlsson is currently in second place out of 75 golfers with a 36-hole total of 9-under 133, trailing California's Stephen Hale by just one stroke.
As a team, the 22nd-ranked Aztecs are in sixth place with a 9-under 559 in the 15-school field that includes six squads rated among the top 50 in the nation. SDSU is two strokes behind fifth place Fresno State and three in back of fourth place Oregon State, which is currently the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. Host California leads the field by five strokes over second place Oregon with a 23-under 545, bolstered by a second-round 17-under 267.
Carlsson beat his previous career-low round of 66, which he recorded at the 2007 Alister MacKenize Invite, as well as the John Burns Intercollegiate in 2008. He opened this year's Alister MacKenzie with a first-round 68, including five birdies, to tie for 11th place, before vaulting up nine slots into second place with six birdies and no bogeys in the day's second 18 holes. Carlsson's 65 ties for third-best in Aztec program history.
SDSU sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) actually led the team after the morning's first round, posting a career-low 4-under 67, including an eagle on the par-5 first hole and four birdies. Spaun, however, slipped from fourth into a tie for 19th, after carding a 73 in the afternoon for a total of 2-under 140.
Aztec redshirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.) is the team's third golfer to be at even or under par through 36 holes, as he recorded an even-par 142, including an opening effort of 69, to tie for 31st place. Sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) is tied for 51st place with a 5-over 147, while freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) is tied for 57th at 6-over 148.
San Diego State will be paired with Fresno State and Oregon State's for Tuesday's final round, beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Aztecs won the Alister MacKenzie Invite in 2007, by overcoming an 11-stroke deficit heading into the final 18 holes. Live stats for Tuesday's round are available at www.golfstat.com.
