The San Diego State men's golf `A' squad gets back to action this week for the first time in nearly a month, as the Aztecs head to the 2009 Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by California, at the par-71, 6,686-yard Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., Oct. 12-13. The 54-hole event will feature two rounds on Monday, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday with both days beginning with shotgun starts.
SDSU, ranked 22nd nationally according to golfstat.com, will be among a field of 15 schools, including six in the national top 50, highlighted by No. 2 Oregon State. The Aztecs are one of three Mountain West Conference schools, as they will also face Colorado State and New Mexico.
Aztec head coach Ryan Donovan will juggle his starting five, with true freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) and redshirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.) traveling with junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomores Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) and J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.). Morris is coming off a win at the Firestone College Invite in Nipomo, Calif., last week, while Berry was the Aztecs' second-best finisher.
Carlsson was the Aztecs' No. 1 golfer at the season-opening tournament in New Mexico, while Cooley led SDSU at the team's most recent event, the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, Sept. 18-20.
SDSU won the 2007 Alister MacKenzie Invitational, coming from 11 strokes down entering the final round to edge second place Washington by four strokes. This year's tournament will feature live stats on www.golfstat.com.
