Senior Rachel Williams (Mt. Hermon, Calif.) finished in 15th-place with a collegiate-best 6,000-meter time of 23 minutes, 9.2 seconds to lead the San Diego State cross country team at the Triton Classic Saturday morning on the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla.
As a team, the Aztecs finished seventh of 13 with 173 points. Central Arizona won the meet with 58 points, followed by UC Irvine (68) and Univ. of Victoria (78). The host Tritons took fourth with 80 points, while Cal Poly Pomona (95), Cal State San Bernardino (171) and SDSU (173) rounded out the top-seven.
Williams' 23:09.2 time is 33 seconds faster than last season's best of 23:42.6, also set at the UCSD course, and the second-fastest time by a San Diego State runner this season. Even more impressive was her 15th-place finish of 122 competing runners.
Freshman Marianne Hogan's (Bedford, Quebec), who owns the best 6K time of the season of 23:03.0, set at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 26, was the Aztecs' next finisher in 30th place at 23:51.8. Junior Michelle Martinez (Burbank, Calif.) took 47th in a season-best time of 24:44.2, while freshman Jordan Davis (Santa Rosa, Calif.) (24:54.1) and junior Sara Beyers (Danville, Calif.) (24:54.7) finished 53rd and 54th, respectively.
Sophomore Melissa Bunn (Simi Valley, Calif.) set a collegiate-best time of 26:00.4 for 74th place to take sixth on the team. Senior Makenzie Mabry (La Crescenta, Calif.) (79th, 26:34.3), and freshmen Sabrina Rathor (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) (87th, 27:16.9) and Hana Llata (Camarillo, Calif.) (93rd, 27:39.7) each made their season debut at the 6K distance.
SDSU will race split squads next weekend, sending some runners to the Northridge Invitational on Friday at 3 p.m. PT, and others to both the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday.
