San Diego State junior Cat Walker scored the game's winning goal in the final minute propelling the Aztecs to a 1-0 victory at Dartmouth Sunday morning. The decision sends SDSU back to Montezuma Mesa with a 1-0-1 record for the road trip and improves its overall record to 3-2-1 for the season. Dartmouth, meanwhile, watches it record fall to 1-1.
For the most part, the first half was controlled by the Big Green. Dartmouth outshot the Aztecs 5-1 in the first 45 minutes with two coming on goal. At 21:50, Becky Poskin posted the home team's initial shot on goal, but was denied by SDSU keeper Aubree Southwick. Then in the 45th minute, Melisa Krnjaic attempted one on goal, but was greeted by Southwick, who notched her second save.
In the second half, the stalemate continued with the Aztecs showing signs of offensive life. Sandwiched between a pair of corner kicks, Heather Vandevanter had a shot blocked and Sarah Halverson forced Dartmouth goalkeeper Colleen Hogan to make a save at 78:08.
Just over three minutes later, Millie Allen had her shot go wide and Walker had her shot stopped by Hogan at 84:33. Following the save, SDSU earned a corner kick, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.
After a pair of substitutions by both teams at 88:59, San Diego State had possession in the 90th minute with Walker controlling the ball. The junior, who was 20 yards out after taking a pass from Sarah Halverson, turned and blasted a shot toward the goal. The shot hit the crossbar, Hogan looked up with the thought the ball was going over, the carom hit Hogan and the ball went into the net to provide the final margin.
The goal at 89:18 was Walker's second of the season and marked her second game-winner of 2009. For Halverson, the assist and point was the freshman's first of her career. Southwick, meanwhile, finished with four saves and her third shutout this year.
SDSU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when it plays at Arizona State. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. PT.
