Fresh off its fourth-place showing at the 65th Aztec Invitational, the San Diego State cross country team will be back in action Saturday in the 36th edition of the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. SDSU will be one of approximately 20 teams competing in 6,000-meter women's race, which will take place at the Stanford Golf Course at 11:30 a.m.
The host Cardinal should be the favorite as its heads into the meet with a No. 5 national ranking. Other good competition for San Diego State includes regionally ranked UC Davis, Sacramento State, USC and Loyola Marymount.
The Aztecs have raced twice this season, taking ninth of 26 teams in the Fullerton Opener on Sept. 5 and finishing fourth of 12 squads at their own Aztec Invitational last Saturday (Sept. 19).
SDSU has been led by the one-two punch of freshman Marianne Hogan and senior Rachel Williams. Hogan made her collegiate debut an impressive one at Fullerton when she was took 21st of 262 runners with a 6K time of 23 minutes, 52 seconds. She was followed by Williams a few seconds back (23:53.5) in 24th. Last Saturday, Williams was the top San Diego State finisher, completing the 5K Balboa Park course in 19:10, good enough for 13th of 94 athletes. Hogan was 18th in 19:39.
Hogan and Williams will be joined this weekend by juniors Sara Beyers and Michelle Martinez, and freshman Jordan Davis.
