SAN DIEGO - Hayley Marsh, a sophomore defender, was named to the Soccer America Women's Team of the Week on Tuesday after helping San Diego State defeat Sacramento State and Long Beach State this past weekend.
The Littleton, Colo., native directed a defense that shutout the Hornets, 2-0, and then returned to the pitch two days later to beat the 49ers, 2-1. Marsh and the SDSU defense held Sacramento State to a single shot on goal and limited LBSU to just three shots on goal.
In the Sacramento State match, Marsh logged 90 minutes of playing time and took a game-high five shots. Of her five attempts, her free kick from 25 yards out found the back of the net and gave the Aztecs an early 1-0 lead. The goal was her second of the year and her second game-winner of 2009. Both totals are the second most on the team.
Against Long Beach State, Marsh played the entire game and was vital in preventing the 49ers from coming away with a positive result. From an offensive standpoint, it was Marsh's free kick that allowed San Diego State to take another 1-0 lead in the first half. After her kick ricocheted off an LBSU player, Michaela DeJesus controlled the rebound and found Hillary Harvey, who scored her first career goal.
On Monday, Marsh earned her first Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week award for her recent performance.
San Diego State is currently on a season-high two-match winning streak and is 3-1-2 in its last six outings. The Aztecs, at 5-3-2 overall, are ranked 10th in the NSCAA Pacific Region poll and are making their first appearance in a regional poll since the 2005 campaign.
SDSU, which is 7-1-1 against its last nine non-conference opponents at home, continues its season-long seven-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 27, when it plays host to UC Irvine. The non-league tilt is set for 2:30 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck.
