The San Diego State women's golf team finished 12th at its first event of the season, posting a final round 304 Sunday morning at the 30th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs ended the tournament with a 29-over 905 and was just one stroke out of 11th place and two behind 10th place Colorado at the par-73, 6,187-yard University of New Mexico Championship Course.
San Diego State's 12th-place team finish was still a one spot improvement from last's year tournament and is the program's second-best showing in seven tries at the Dick McGuire Invite since 2002.
SDSU freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) had a stellar first day as a collegian Saturday with a pair of sub-par rounds, but could not duplicate the effort over the final 18 holes. Wong dropped from third into a tie for 15th with a 6-over 79, including five bogeys and one double bogey on the par-4 eighth hole. Wong only had six bogeys in the first 36 holes and ended the invitational at 1-over 220.
While Wong slipped on the final leaderboard, teammate Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) improved by 21 slots from 56th to 35th with her even-par 73 to card a 54-hole total of 7-over 226. Enarsson birdied her first hole of the day and would later add birdies on the No. 6 and No. 9 to offset her trio of bogeys.
Aztec freshman Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) was at 5-over par entering Sunday's round, but had seven bogeys, including a string of three straight, to drop from 42nd to 62nd place at 12-over 231. Sophomore Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) jumped nine slots into a tie for 79th with a 232, bolstered by her tournament best round of 2-over 75. Junior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) matched her second-round score of 77 to end up in a tie for 84th place with a 18-over 237.
Pepperdine won the tournament title by seven strokes over host New Mexico with a 17-under 859. Oregon's Kendra Little maintained her first place hold with a final round 68 to earn medalist honors at 12-under 207.
San Diego State will take nearly two weeks off before heading to Colorado for the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, Oct. 5-6, in Erie, Colo.
