- San Diego State falls to 0-21-1 in the all-time series with UCLA.
SCORING POINTS
- SDSU has now scored a touchdown in 27 straight games.
- San Diego State's 11-point lead in the first half was its largest advantage in the 19 all-time Division I era meetings between the Bruins and Aztecs. San Diego State had a seven-point advantage in the Sept. 16, 1989 contest that UCLA went on to win, 28-25.
-SDSU's 14 first-quarter points are the most it has scored in the first quarter of a game since recording 17 vs. TCU on Nov. 24, 2007 ... The 14 points are more than the Aztecs have scored in an entire game vs. the Bruins in six of the last seven meetings between the two foes.
CAREER FIRSTS
SDSU had eight players make their first career starts today, including a pair of true freshmen. Of the eight first-time starters, four were doing so in their first career games. The players making their first career starts today, include: LT Tommie Draheim, LG Mike Matamua, WR DeMarco Sampson, RB Anthony Miller, LB Miles Burris, CB Leon McFadden, Warrior Dey Juan Hemmings and Warrior Brandon Davis.
In all, the Aztecs had 15 players log minutes in their first career outing, including four true freshmen. The players making their first career appearances in the Red & Black include: Vincent Camarda, Doug Deakin, Tommie Draheim, Walter Kazee, Mike Matamua, Leon McFadden, Anthony Miller, Josh O'Brien, Larry Parker, Bryan Shields, D.J. Shields, Khalid Stevens, Jake Tauanuu, Frederick Trujillo and Josh Wade.
BROWN OVER 1,000 AND 100
Needing just 20 yards to surpass the 1,000-yard career receiving mark entering the night, Aztec junior Vincent Brown became the 24th player in SDSU history to reach the milestone with his five catches for 139 yards today. Brown also recorded his 100th career reception. His career numbers now stand at 100 receptions for 1,119 yards in 25 games.
Brown also collected his third, 100-yard career receiving game and his second in the last two outings. Brown capped 2008 with eight catches for 119 yards in the Aztecs' season-ending win over UNLV. His 139 yards tonight are his second-best, trailing his 183-yard effort vs. Idaho in 2007.
In addition, Brown recorded his career-long reception on the 78-yard touchdown score from Ryan Lindley, beating his previous long of 62 yards against Portland State in 2007. The 78-yard hook up was the Aztecs' longest completed pass since the 97-yarder by Chaz Schilens from Kevin O'Connell against TCU, Nov. 24, 2007.
THE LINE ON LINDLEY
Aztec sophomore Ryan Lindley started his 12th career game at quarterback. He completed 18 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. With his effort, Lindley moved from 18th to 17th in SDSU career passing yards with 2,891, jumping over Rod Dowhower.
In the first quarter, Lindley notched his career long pass on the 78-yard touchdown to Vincent Brown. Lindley's previous longest pass was a 51-yarder vs. Idaho in 2008.
OTHER NOTES
- Dey Juan Hemmings led the Aztec defense with a career-best seven tackles.
- The SDSU defense compiled 12 tackles for loss with three of them being sacks.
- SDSU defensive end B.J. Williams recorded his third career fumble recovery in the second quarter. He recovered a pair a year ago as a sophomore.
- Sophomore defensive back Brandon Davis logged his first career forced fumble.
- Aztec defensive back Nick Sandford notched his first career sack in the first half.
- SDSU true freshman Leon McFadden was credited with the block on UCLA's first-half extra-point attempt. The Aztecs had one blocked kick a year ago on an extra-point attempt.
- SDSU linebacker Luke Laolagi logged his second career interception in the third quarter. Laolagi's first career pick came in the 2008 finale against UNLV, giving him two INTs in his last two outings.
- SDSU defensive back Vincent Camarda recorded his first career interception in his first career game in the fourth quarter.
- Senior tight end/fullback Matt Kawulok scored his first career touchdown in the first quarter on a four-yard pass play.
