SAN DIEGO - For the second consecutive year, Karoline Koehler has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 women's track and field/cross country first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. She is one of 10 student-athletes chosen to the first team and will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-American national ballot, where the final teams will be announced later this month.
Koehler, from Erfurt, Germany, is studying international economics at San Diego State and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.82.
Earlier this year, Koehler earned her second straight All-America honor in the indoor triple jump after finishing in third place at the NCAA Indoor Championships after having already won the Mountain West Conference indoor long jump crown just weeks before.
Koehler's indoor performance spring-boarded her into what has become a stellar outdoor campaign that has seen her win the conference title in both the long and triple jump. At the conclusion of the MWC meet, Koehler was given the High Point Award, which is presented to the athlete who scores the most points over the course of the league championships.
Following the MWC Outdoor Championships, Koehler appeared at the NCAA West Regionals and qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the four events in which she competed. Koehler won the triple jump with a meet- and school-record leap of 44-09.00 and was the runner-up in the long jump after covering a personal- and program-record 21-09.50. In the running events, Koehler finished in fourth place in the 100 meters after posting the school's second-best time (11.43) in the preliminaries the day before. In the 4x100 relay, Koehler helped the SDSU quartet record the third-best time (44.74) in school history in the prelims, before finishing in fifth place in the finals. On Tuesday, the relay earned an at-large bid to nationals.
Koehler currently owns the school record in the indoor and outdoor long jump and the outdoor triple jump, while owning the second-best mark in the indoor triple jump, 60 meters and 100 meters.
To be eligible for consideration, nominees must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale in both undergraduate and graduate work, be a significant contributor to the team, and be in at least their second season at their current school. District 8 is comprised of all NCAA Division I schools from California, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Utah.
