SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head coach Beth Burns has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Board of Directors, the WBCA announced Wednesday. Burns will serve as an at-large representative on the 23-member board until August 2010, as she finishes the current term of Arizona State's Charli Turner-Thorne, who was named the organization's vice president.
This is Burns' first stint on the WBCA Board of Directors, however, she has been an active member of the organization in the past. In 2008-09, she served as a committee member for the Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award, which this year was presented to the late Kay Yow for her lifelong commitment of service to the game of women's basketball. Burns also was a member of the voting panel for the WBCA/USA Today Coaches Top 25 national weekly poll.
The WBCA Board of Directors includes representatives from the high school, collegiate and professional levels. It develops policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the organization. The board also monitors the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance and provides the chief executive officer with the resources to meet the needs of those the organization serves.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
