The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of close games to Brigham Young Saturday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (32-18, 9-5 Mountain West Conference) lost the first game, 2-1, in nine innings after leaving a season-high 13 runners on base before falling in the nightcap by a 2-0 score. The Cougars (37-15, 10-1 MWC) clinched the 2009 league title with the victories.
In the first game, SDSU had runners on base in seven of the nine innings, including bases loaded opportunities in the fourth and ninth, but was unable to get the crucial run across home plate.
BYU had taken the early 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Stephanie Hopkins that scored Andrea Ramirez from second base. A pair of bunt singles after by Krista Hicks and Monica Gonzales loaded the bases with one out. Freshman pitcher Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.), however, buckled down and got San Diego State out of the jam by getting Kristin Dellahoussaye to pop-up weakly to redshirt senior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) at first and striking out Tiffany Messerchmidt looking to keep the damage to a minimum.
The Aztecs finally broke through with a score in the sixth, thanks to a two-out error by Brigham Young's pitcher Paige Affleck. Senior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) singled down the left field line to lead off the frame, moved to second on a groundout by redshirt senior Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) and then got to third on a wild pitch after a flyout by redshirt junior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.). Sophomore Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.), who had singled home McCorkle in the same situation for the game-winning hit in a 5-4 SDSU win over the Cougars the night before, chopped the ball to Affleck. Affleck bobbled the ball on the play and McCorkle tied the game for San Diego State.
The Aztecs would return the favor with two outs in the ninth when sophomore shortstop Jen Wisneski's (Riverside, Calif.) sailed a throw over the head of Alnes at first which allowed Hopkins to score.
Micetich (18-6) was the tough luck loser after striking out 10 over 8 2/3 innings. She gave up two runs (one earned) on nine hits, including eight singles, and three walks.
Knudsen (3-for-4, walk) and McCorkle (3-for-5, run) were the only players to get a hit for SDSU.
It was much of the same in the nightcap as the San Diego State offense managed just three hits, one each by senior All-American Erin Floros (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS), Alnes and Camello (double).
The three hits were not enough for sophomore pitcher Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (14-12), who gave up two unearned runs on six hits and a walk. She struck out six over seven innings.
Both BYU runs came in the sixth after Alnes prolonged the Brigham Young at-bat on a two-out fielding error. The miscue allowed Monica Gonzales to score from third and later in the inning an RBI single by Ramirez plated Quiocho for an insurance run.
San Diego State will wrap up its regular season with a single game against UNLV at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 9).
