LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team had a successful first day at the WIRA Championships Saturday on the shores of Lake Natoma, Calif. All five competing boats made it out of the preliminary heats to Sunday's grand finals for the second time in program history.
The second novice eight boat highlighted the day for the Aztecs with a convincing 14.10-second victory in heat two. SDSU completed the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 31.90 seconds, easily outdistancing second-place Sacramento State. The second novice eight will move on to Sunday's grand final beginning at 9:20 a.m. against Sac State, Humboldt State, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara.
The other victory for San Diego State on the day came by the second varsity eight boat. In the four-boat race, the Aztecs rowed to a 7:00.70 clocking to beat out Sacramento State (7:02.30), UC Davis (7:03.00) and Saint Mary's College (7:22.40). The boat will now row at 10:50 a.m. Sunday in the grand final.
The novice eight boat moved on to Sunday's grand final with a runner-up finish in its race, clocking a 7:11.42., just behind Sac State's 7:08.81. Humboldt State (7:28.33), Long Beach State (7:32.44), UC San Diego (7:40.85) and Santa Clara (7:51.46) rounded out the competitors. SDSU is scheduled to row the grand final at 10 a.m. Sunday versus boats from Sacramento State, Gonzaga, Western Washington, UC Davis and Orange Coast College.
In varsity eight competition, San Diego State finished third of four boats with a time of 6:54.90 in a race won by Sac State (6:42.10). UC Davis was second (6:47.70) and Loyola Marymount was fourth (7:01.10). The Aztecs will row in the grand final at 12:10 p.m. Sunday.
Completing the first day of the WIRA Championships for the Aztecs was the varsity four. In its race, SDSU finished third at 7:45.50, more than nine seconds ahead of UC Davis (7:54.80). Gonzaga (7:38.40) and UC Irvine (7:42.60) finished first and second, respectively. San Diego State will meet Gonzaga, UC Irvine, San Diego and Santa Clara in Sunday's grand final, beginning at 8:10 a.m.
