DALY CITY, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team fired a 4-under par 284 on Saturday during the final round of the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championships in Daly City, Calif. The Aztecs carded a 7-under 857 collective total for the 54-hole tournament to finish in seventh place out of 13 teams, missing out on a berth in the NCAA championship tournament.

The top five teams from each of the six regional sites advance to the championship tournament. Tournament leader after the first two days, Arizona State claimed the West Regional title after posting a combined 36-under par 828. Oregon (-27), Texas A&M (-24), San Diego (-15) and Southern California (-11) placed second through fifth, respectively, to advance to the NCAA championship, which will be held May 26-30 in Toledo, Ohio.

Three Aztecs managed to fire under-par rounds on the final day of the West Regional. Freshman J.J. Spaun fired his best round of the tournament on Saturday with his 3-under par effort. The San Dimas, Calif. product posted seven birdies over the final 18-holes to move up 18 places on the final leaderboard and tie for 48th place at 3-over 219.

Andrew Cooley fired SDSU's second-best score of the day with his 2-under par 70. The freshman from New Haw, Surrey, England moved up three places into a tie for 24th position on the strength of his string of four birdies and one par on holes 14 through 18. Cooley completed his first postseason appearance at 2-under 214.

Sophomore Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the final Aztec to post an under-par round on the final day of competition. He finished in a tie for 18th place on the individual leaderboard after a round where he posted two birdies to offset one bogey and 15 pars. Carlson finished his second West Regional with a 3-under 213 54-hole total.

Freshman Alex Kang was unable to carry his second-round success over to the final day, posting a 2-over 74 in the third round. The Oak Park, Calif. native completed tournament action in a tie for 27th place with his three-round 1-under par 215 showing.

Rounding out the Aztec delegation was senior Bryan Martin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who found trouble over his last 18-holes. Martin posted a 5-over 77 on Saturday to tie for 70th position at 9-over 225.

Final-round scores with relation to par May 16, at the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championship, played at the par-72, 6,849-yard Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.
