DALY CITY, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team shot a combined 1-under-par 287 on Friday in the second round of the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championship on the 6,849-yard, par-72 Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. With its 3-under par 573 36-hole total, SDSU finds itself in eighth place in the 13-team field, just four strokes back of fifth place Southern California (-7) in the 54-hole tournament as the top five teams from each of six regionals advance to the national championship tournament. Arizona State held on to its early lead after posting a collective 22-under 554 to take a six-shot lead over Oregon (-16), followed by San Diego (-10), Texas A&M (-9), Southern California (-7), host San Francisco (-5), New Mexico (-4) and SDSU (-3).

SDSU's Alex Kang made great progress on Friday as the freshman vaulted eight places into a tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard with a combined 3-under 141. Kang shaved three strokes off his opening-round total, offsetting two bogies and a double-bogey with seven birdies. The Oak Park, Calif. product drained three birdies and three pars over the final six holes to enter the clubhouse just one stroke out of the top 10.

Sophomore Johan Carlsson, who led the SDSU charge on the first day of regional action, was unable to match his opening-round under-par performance on day two. The Gothenburg, Sweden native fired an even-par 72 to finish Friday's action in tie for 18th place. Carlsson birdied the par-5 18th hole to finish with a combined 2-under 142 after 36-holes.

Andrew Cooley posted his second-consecutive even-par round of regional action, sitting in a tie for 27th position on the individual leaderboard with his 144 two-round total. The freshman from New Haw, Surrey, England carded birdies on holes 14 and 18 to conclude second-day action one stroke out of the top 20.

Senior Bryan Martin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) ran into trouble from the first tee. Although he posted four birdies in the second round, Martin was unable to overcome trouble on day two to finish the day with a 4-over 76. He sits in a tie for 56th with his 148 36-hole total.

Freshman J.J. Spaun showed improvement during the second round, shaving two strokes off his first-round total to post a 2-over 74. The San Dimas, Calif. product recorded two birdies on the back nine to end the day in a tie for 66th at 6-over 150.

San Diego State will tee-off with New Mexico and UC Irvine at 10:10 a.m. PT Saturday for the final round of the NCAA West Regional. A link for live scoring will be available on GoAztecs.com.
