SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior right-hander Stephen Strasburg has been named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week, marking the sixth time he has received the honor during the 2009 campaign.

Strasburg, from San Diego, Calif. (West Hills HS), went 8.0 innings in San Diego State's 5-0 win at Santa Clara on May 1. He finished the night with three hits allowed, walking two and striking out 12.

The Broncos loaded the bases with two out in the second inning, but Strasburg got a strikeout for the final out. No other Santa Clara base runner reached as far as second base in Strasburg's other seven frames. After allowing a leadoff single in the third, the junior right-hander retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced before leaving the game. Santa Clara hit just .115 (3-for-26) against him for the game.

The junior right-hander is 10-0 this season with a 1.38 earned run average. He leads the nation in strikeouts (147) as well a strikeouts per nine innings (16.9). His ERA is second among Division I pitchers and he is fifth in hits allowed per nine innings.

Strasburg's next start is scheduled for this Friday, May 8, when the Aztecs take on Air Force at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The contest is a sellout, but live audio and video coverage of the contest is available on the SDSU web site (www.GoAztecs.com).
