SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The San Diego State men's golf team sent individuals to compete at the 54-hole Wyoming Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland Golf. Three of the five Aztecs posted a better third-round score and ultimately improved upon their standing after day one.
SDSU freshman J.J. Spaun led all Aztecs at the event after recording a 2-under par total, equaling his lowest three-round score in relation to par of the spring campaign. His seventh place tie on the final leaderboard is also his best this spring and equals his Aztec best. The San Dimas, Calif. product posted rounds of 71-68-69 (208) en route to his lowest 54-hole total with the Scarlet and Black.
Classmate Alex Kang showed the biggest improvement on the individual leaderboard as he jumped 15 spots to finish in a tie for 44th place. The Oak Park, Calif. native fired an even-par 70 on the final day to conclude tournament play with a 7-over 217. Junior Michael Wynn (Las Vegas, Nev.) also jumped one spot in the final standings as he carded his low-round of the two-day tournament by one stroke, logging a 74 to finish with a 14-over 224 in a tie for 83rd position.
Sophomore Jerry Porras matched his second-round score with a 76 over the final 18 holes. The Tijuana, Mexico product dropped six spots from 86th to a tie for 93rd place with a 36-hole 227 total. Freshman Tyler Morris was able to move up 11 spots on the leaderboard from 104th to tie for 93rd with Porras after he carded a final-round 72. The Encinitas, Calif. native recorded his low-round of the classic by four strokes, concluding tournament play with a 227 total.
UC Davis won their third consecutive Cowboy Classic and did so in record-breaking style. The Aggies posted the best tournament finish in classic history, a 15-under par 825. They also had the best team round in the history of the classic on Tuesday, a 13-under par 267. The Aggies were paced by medalist Austin Graham who logged a 6-under two-day total.
San Diego State will continue play in the Grand Canyon State on Friday, April 10, at the 37th annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The Aztecs will send six different players to compete at ASU's 7,057 yard, par 71, Karsten Golf Course.
