SAN DIEGO - The second novice eight boat finished third in its race to pace the San Diego State rowers on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday at Crown Point Shores Park on Mission Bay.
The Aztecs' boat completed the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 32.76 seconds in the final of the event, good enough for third of seven boats. SDSU trailed only Minnesota (7:21.70) and Oklahoma (7:32.68), while easily outdistancing fourth-place UC Santa Barbara (7:45.63).
In other novice action, San Diego State's first novice eight boat finished third of six in the petite final with a 7:18.29 clocking, narrowly missing out on runner-up Kansas State (7:16.25) in a race won by UC Davis (7:14.70). Earlier in the day, the boat was fourth of seven in its preliminary heat.
The Aztecs' varsity eight boat advanced to Sunday's petite final (8:30 a.m.) after finishing third of six in their preliminary heat, clocking a time of 7:11.59. Kansas State (7:02.60) and San Diego (7:04.68) went 1-2.
Finally, the second varsity boat took fourth in the six-boat race in the third preliminary heat. SDSU, which clocked a 7:18.00 time, trailed only Wisconsin (6:59.08), Oregon State (7:00.89) and Washington State (7:03.03), and will now compete in the petite final at 8:10 a.m. Sunday.
