ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The third-seed San Diego State women's tennis team came up just short to Utah, 4-3, on Thursday at the Mountain West Conference Championships. The Aztecs battled back from being down 3-0 to to tie the match 3-3, before falling in fourth singles.
In doubles action, the 68th-ranked doubles team of Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk were outpaced at the top position by Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan, 8-3. Roxanne and Sierra Ellison continued their domination of second doubles by downing Evegina Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh, 8-5. In the end, the doubles point would come down to third doubles where Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov put up a fight for the point against Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson. The Aztec duo ultimately dropped the decision, 9-8 (3).
With a one point lead already in place, Utah came out strong in singles action. Putilina picked up her second win of the day by defeating Trunk in first singles, 6-0, 6-3. Later at No. 3, Kryuchkova would take the score to 3-0 by getting past Cadua, 6-0, 6-4.
At second singles, in a match that would have clinched the victory for the Utes, Bagshaw rallied to take down Monson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Sierra Ellison would keep SDSU alive by downing Johnson in at No. 6, 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2. Yusupov also fought back in fifth singles by defeating Lisa Provancha, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The deciding match would come down to fourth singles where freshman Roxanne Ellison would attempt to pick up her second win of the day. The match would go to three sets before Walsh topped Ellison to claim the victory for the Utes, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
San Diego State now stands at 17-8 overall and 6-2 in conference standings. The Aztecs now will wait to hear if they are selected for the NCAA tournament on April 28.
