ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The fifth-seeded San Diego State men's tennis team upset fourth-seeded Brigham Young Thursday morning at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs took the match in decisive fashion by defeating each Cougar opponent in straight sets.
In doubles action, SDSU got out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point. In second doubles, Bartosz Golas and Tim Schulz van Endert took down Georgy Batrkov and A.J. Young, 8-3. Achim Ceban and Juan Gomez clinched the doubles point by topping Thomas Shubert and Daniel Hwang in first doubles, 8-5. In third doubles, Giovanni Vaglietti and Andre Feliz were on their way to complete the doubles sweep for the Aztecs over Cassidy Mears and Evan Urbina before play was suspended at 6-5 due to the doubles point already being decided.
In singles action, San Diego State earned the upset victory in dominating fashion, downing each of their opponents in straight sets. In first singles, No. 125 Ceban downed Urbina, 6-2, 6-2. Schulz van Endert was just as dominating in fifth singles as he defeated Batrakov, 6-3, 6-4. With only one more point needed to decide the match, Gomez claimed the victory for the Aztecs by topping Roman Warias in second singles, 7-6, 6-0.
With the win, SDSU moves on to the semifinals where the Aztecs will face top-seeded TCU tomorrow, April 24, at 10 a.m. MT. Earlier this season, San Diego State hosted the Horned Frogs, but fell, 4-2, as doubles play was canceled due to the threat of rain. This season, TCU went 5-1 in league play to capture the regular season title.
