SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football staff will welcome legendary Aztec coach Don Coryell to the sidelines on May 2 for the annual Red & Black game. Coryell will serve as a guest coach for the spring workout finale.
Coryell was the first head football coach to win more than 100 games in college and the pros. At San Diego State from 1961-1972, he compiled a 104-19-2 record, had three undefeated teams and win streaks of 31 and 25 games. Coryell's football program produced multiple gridiron stars, including current Aztec coach Brian Sipe.
Moving to the NFL, Coryell won division titles with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1974 and 1975. His dynamic San Diego Chargers won AFC West titles in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and went to the playoffs four times. He was NFL Coach of the Year in 1979 and made "Air Coryell" the most prolific passing offense in NFL history.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
The San Diego State football team's next workout, that will be open to the public, is on Saturday, April 25, the team's second intrasquad scrimmage. Spring practice will conclude with the annual Red & Black game on May 2, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
