TEMPE, Ariz. - The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in fifth place after two rounds following a 9-over par 577 performance on Friday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Host school Arizona State lead the tournament with a score of 9-under and is followed by Denver (-2), TCU (+2), UC Irvine (+5) and the Aztecs.

Senior Ryan Citarella, who ended the day in a tie for seventh place at -1, fired the tournament's best round of the day with a 6-under 65 after the first 18 holes thanks to seven birdies and one bogey. The Santa Ana, Calif. product could not match his first round success in the afternoon session, however, finishing up with a 5-over 76 in the second round.

Classmate Bryan Martin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) fired consecutive rounds of 1-over 72 for a 2-over 36-hole total. Martin heads into Saturday's final round tied for 27th on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Matt Hoffenberg opened up the invitational with an even-par 71 in the morning round. The Simi Valley, Calif. native finished the second 18 holes with a 4-over 75, placing him in a tie for 42nd place going into the third round.

Fellow sophomore Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) fired a 4-under 67 in the opening round of the invite, placing him in a tie for second place going into the afternoon round. Carlsson, however, could not find his rhythm and finished with a 9-over 80 in the second round. He enters the final day in a tie for 50th position at 5-over par.

Rounding out he scoring for SDSU was freshman Colin Featherstone. The Fallbrook, Calif. native found himself in a tie for 39th with his opening-round 72, but fell off the pace in the second round. Featherstone fired a 7-over 79 in the afternoon, placing him in a tie for 79th place at the end of day one.

Competing as an individual for the Scarlet and Black is Andrew Cooley, who shot a first-round 72, putting himself in a tie with Featherstone. Cooley (New Haw, Surrey, England) had to settle for a 5-over 76 in the second round, placing him in a tie for 59th at the conclusion of the first day.

The third and final round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational will be played on Saturday at the 7,057 yard, par-71 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. San Diego State will be paired with UC Irvine and California for final round action, with SDSU's first tee time at 7:45 a.m. PT. A link for live scoring will be available on GoAztecs.com.
