Aztec Rowers Head North for Dual Races With Sacramento State, UC Davis
* The San Diego State rowing team takes its annual trip north this weekend when it faces Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Aztecs will look for revenge after splitting four races with the Hornets last year and dropping three of four races against the Aggies.

SDSU will have five boats compete on Saturday against Sac State and another five against UC Davis on Sunday.

On Saturday, the novice eight race kicks off the day at 8:30 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight (8:45 a.m.), varsity eight (9 a.m.), varsity four (9:15 a.m.) and the novice four (9:30 a.m.). All races will be held on Lake Natoma at the CSUS Aquatic Center at 1901 Hazel Ave., Gold River, CA (95670). The best place for fans to view Saturday's race is from the shores of the Folsom Lake State Recreation area.

On Sunday, the novice eight boat kicks things off once again with its race beginning at 8:30 a.m. The varsity eight race will follow at 8:45 a.m., with the second novice eight (9 a.m.), varsity four (9:15 a.m.) and second varsity eight (9:30 a.m.) races concluding the weekend. All Sunday races will be held in the Port of Sacramento at the UC Davis boathouse (exit Harbor Blvd. from the I-80 OR US-50 and head south. Turn RIGHT onto Industrial Blvd. Turn LEFT into the gate approx. 200 yards down Industrial. Follow the paved path to the right around the perimeter of the Laborer's Training Center. When the paved path dead ends, turn RIGHT down the dirt path toward the boathouse). The best place to view Sunday's action is from the Industrial Blvd. bridge.

After the dual races this weekend, SDSU will return to Mission Bay to compete against Oklahoma on April 3, followed by the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic on April 4-5.

Last Season Against Sacramento State and UC Davis
* at Sacramento State: The Aztecs came out victorious in the varsity eight race and went 1-2 in the novice eight event last year against Sacramento State. In varsity eight action, SDSU broke open a tight race over the final 1,000 meters to finish with a time of 6 minutes, 49.0 seconds, almost five seconds ahead of the Hornets (6:53.7). The boat avenged losses from each of the previous two seasons with a four-second improvement from 2007 (6:53.30) after a 6:59.0 clocking in 2006.

The second varsity eight race didn't go as well as San Diego State (7:11.1) fell to host Sacramento State (7:04.2).

The Aztecs' (8:04.0) varsity four boat finished ahead of the Hornets' `B' boat (8:30.4), but was unable to catch their `A' boat, which rowed to a time of 7:56.9.

SDSU's novice eight `A' continued its dominance in the water with its third straight victory, this time clocking a time of 7:20.7. The novice `B' boat was right behind with a time of 7:27.2, while the Hornets were third in 7:30.6.

* at UC Davis: The second novice eight boat came up with an 11.54-second victory to lead the San Diego State crew team against UC Davis. It was the lone victory of the day for the Aztecs.

In the second novice eight race, SDSU raced to a time of 7 minutes, 12.19 seconds, outdistancing UC Davis `A' (7:24.13) and UC Davis `B' (8:46.51). The time was over a 12-second improvement of the previous year's time of 7:24.20.

In other novice action, the San Diego State novice eight boat suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of the Aggies. UC Davis won the two-boat race in 6:55.88, just seconds ahead of the Aztecs (6:59.91). However, the 6:55.88 clocking is the boat's fastest time over the past three trips to UC Davis.

UC Davis also defeated SDSU in all three varsity races, including a 6:33.64-6:49.19 decision in the varsity eight race and a 6:57.03-7:02.06 advantage in the second varsity eight event.

In the varsity four race, the Aztecs finished second of three boats with a 7:57.01 clocking. The Aggies' `A' boat won in 7:30.96, while their `B' boat was third in 8:12.53.

Last Time in the Water With the Aztecs
The San Diego State rowing team finished runner-up to Pac-10 power UCLA in all four races on March 14 at Bollona Creek in Marina del Rey, Calif.

The best race of the day may have been the novice eight race, where the Aztecs' 'A' boat was narrowly edged by the Bruins boat. SDSU was in the lead through the first 1,500 meters of the 2K course. However, UCLA made a late run over the final 500 meters to finish first in 6 minutes, 21.07 seconds to San Diego State's 6:22.63. The Aztec 'B' boat was third in 6:52.17.

In varsity eight action, the Bruins boat finished in 6:49.89, outdistancing SDSU (7:13.33) by 23.33 seconds.

The second varsity eight race was much closer, but UCLA still prevailed in 7:07.16. San Diego State was just 9.62 back in 7:16.78.

The Bruins also took the varsity four race with a time of 7:11.8, some 15.3 seconds ahead of the Aztecs' 7:11.8 clocking.
