SAN DIEGO - On a day when both San Diego State and Harvard honored recently passed tennis coach Tom Hagedorn, the Aztecs emerged with a victory. Both tennis teams honored the deceased coach by holding a moment of silence and wearing black armbands. No. 37 SDSU was able to defeat the Crimson, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
In doubles action the No. 57 doubles team of Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti began the domination of Harvard by downing Alexei Chijoff-Evans and Alistair Felton, 9-8 (6), in first doubles. In second doubles Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez claimed the doubles point for the Aztecs by defeating Davis Mangham and Aba Omodele-Lucien, 9-8 (4). Tim Schulz van Endert and Jordan Colman completed the doubles sweep by downing Will Guzick and Tim Wu in third doubles, 8-7 (3).
Gomez continued San Diego State's winning ways by defeating Mangham in third singles, 6-2, ret. The success continued in second singles as Golas downed Felton, 6-3, 6-4. In Harvard's only victory of the day Omodele-Lucien was able to get past Vaglietti in fourth singles, 7-6 (7), 6-2. Andre Feliz bounced back for SDSU by taking down Guzick in fifth singles, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Schulz van Endert picked up a decision over Robert McAnulty in sixth singles, 7-6 (7), 6-3. Ceban would finish off the Crimson by downing Chijoff-Evans in first singles, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 1-0 (10-6).
San Diego State will next travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to kick off conference play against UNLV.
