RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - \
San Diego State men's golf team dropped its first match of the day against Middle Tennessee, 3-2, but rebounded to defeat Texas Tech, 3-2, in the afternoon semifinal round at the exclusive Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. With the split, the Aztecs will play a final match for fifth place at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Tuesday, March 24.
SDSU's Johan Carlsson and Matt Hoffenberg each claimed matches during its 3-2 loss against Middle Tennessee in the opening Match. Carlsson outplayed Rick Cochran on his way to a 5 and 4 victory, while Hoffenberg defeated Jason Millard, 1-up.
In the afternoon match-up with Texas Tech, Andrew Cooley, Alex Kang and Bryan Martin each claimed victories en route to the Scarlet and Black's 3-2 victory over the Red Raiders. Colley outlasted Santiago Rivas to win the point, 1-up, while Alex Kang earned his victory over Chris Ward with his 2-up finish. Bryan Martin claimed his match with his 5 and 4 triumph over Will Griffin.
Middle Tennessee will play in the title match of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, but will have to wait until tomorrow morning to find out if it will face top-seed Indiana or UCLA after play was suspended due to darkness. The semifinals will continue at 7:30 Tuesday morning.
The Bruins and Hoosiers have three matches remaining, all with two holes remaining. Indiana's Seth Brandon and Alex Martin are 1-up in their two matches while UCLA's Gregor Main holds a 1-up advantage in his match. The two teams have split their completed matches with Hoosier David Erdy winning 2 and 1 and the Bruin's Connor Driscoll posting a 4 and 3 victory.
The match play event concludes tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. start. San Diego State will take on Stanford for fifth place. A link to live results will be available on GoAztecs.com.
