FULLERTON, Calif. -
Redshirt junior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead the San Diego State softball team past Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Family Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs, who shut out the Titans (12-15), 6-0, last night at SDSU Softball Stadium, improved to 21-13 with the victory.
SDSU, which has now won 10 of its last 12 games, 12 of its last 15 and 16 of its last 21 contests, outhit Cal State Fullerton, 10-5, for its eighth double-digit hit game this season.
In addition to Alnes' perfect day at the plate, senior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) and sophomore Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) each contributed two hits apiece. Senior All-American Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) doubled and scored a run, while redshirt senior Taryin Casillas (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont HS) had an RBI single.
San Diego State continued its momentum from Friday night, where it scored all six of its runs in its last at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, by putting up two scores in the top of the first. Freshman Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) reached first base after being hit by a pitch with one out and Floros followed with a double to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Casillas then singled up the middle for the first run of the game. Following an infield single by McCorkle, Alnes laced a 3-2 pitch to right field to score Floros and put the Aztecs up, 2-0. SDSU, however, were unable to get any more runs across in the inning.
Alnes made it 3-0 San Diego State in the fourth with a one-out solo homer. It was Alnes' first home run of the season and eighth of her career.
The three runs would be plenty for Aztec freshman pitcher Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.). Micetich gave up five hits, three of which were singles, and two walks over seven scoreless innings to pick up her fifth complete game shutout of the season. She added five strikeouts to improve to 11-4 in 2009..
SDSU will be off until April 1 when it travels across town to take on San Diego at 6 p.m.
