SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team took down No. 58 Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs picked up their ninth win of the season in the first of two matches against nationally ranked teams this week.
Esther Cadua and Emma Cioffi claimed the first win of the day in third doubles by defeating Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt, 8-4. In first doubles, 40th-ranked Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk dropped only their second match this season, falling to Madeleine Geibert and Jana Albers, 8-5. Roxanne and Sierra Ellison clinched the doubles point by downing Wiveca Swarting and Maria Ring in second doubles, 8-6.
In singles action, Cadua picked up her second win of the day by taking down Swarting in fourth singles, 7-5, 6-4. Olivia Colman would continue the winning ways for SDSU by defeating Ashley Finnegan in fifth singles, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. In first singles Trunk fell to Geibert despite a strong effort, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Cioffi was unable to pull out a win, falling to Albers in third singles, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, while Bagshaw was also outpaced by her Husker opponent, Weatherholt, in second singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In sixth singles Roxanne Ellison was able to clinch the match for San Diego State by downing Holmberg, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3).
With the victory the Aztecs improve their season record to 9-3. SDSU will next face No. 68 Purdue on March 19 at 2 p.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
