San Diego State men's golf team finds itself perched atop the team standings after carding a combined 23-under 697, opening up a 12-stroke lead over New Mexico (-11) at the 7,393-yard, par-72 Barona Creek Golf Club. Propelled by all six "Red" team players in the top-20, the Aztecs were the only school to complete each of the first two rounds under par.

The San Diego State charge for first place was led by sophomore Matt Hoffenberg. The Simi Valley, Calif. native posted his best 36-hole total of the 2008-09 season after carding rounds of 69-68 to finish in a tie atop the leaderboard at 7-under. Hoffenberg recorded 10 birdies over two rounds to lead the Scarlet and Black.

Finishing just one stroke behind Hoffenberg was freshman Alex Kang, who finished the first day in a tie for fourth place after carding a 6-under (68-70) two-round total. The Oak Park, Calif. product recorded nine birdies and an eagle over the 36 holes en route to his lowest 36-hole score as an Aztec.

Junior Bryan Martin and freshman Colin Featherstone found themselves in a tie for seventh position at the end of day one. Martin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) improved on his first-round 72 by logging a 4-under 68 in the afternoon session. He recorded four birdies during the day and his second round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 13th. Featherstone, meanwhile, continued his impressive play this spring by firing off a first-round 68, before carding an even-par second round. The Fallbrook, Calif. product recorded seven birdies en route to tying his best 18-hole score (68) and totaling his best 36-hole total (140) in his Aztec career.

Andrew Cooley finds himself just outside the top-10 after the first two rounds, finishing with a 1-under 143 total. The New Haw, Surrey, England, native was able to move up the leaderboard over the course of the second 18 after he shot a 2-under 70 in the afternoon session, three strokes better than his opening-round 73. Cooley recorded five birdies over his final nine holes in the afternoon session to sit in a tie for 13th place.

The final member of the SDSU "Red" team, Johan Carlsson, wrapped up first-day action by improving upon his first round 73 to fire a second round 1-under 71. The freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, completed the first 36-holes in a tie for 18th place with his even-par 144, his best two-round total of the spring.

Meanwhile, six other golfers also competed as individuals for the San Diego State "Black" team, led by freshman J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who fired a 1-under 143 to tie for 13th after two rounds. Senior Ryan Citarella (Santa Ana, Calif.) carded a 4-over 148 to finish the first day in a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Jerry Porras (Tijuana, Mexico), who is making his first appearance of the spring season, carded a two-round 5-over 149 total to tie for 37th after the first day. Freshman Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.) recorded his best 36-hole total of the spring with a 6-over 150 to finish day one in a tie for 42nd. Junior Michael Wynn (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior David Palm sit within the top-60, completing Monday's play in 55th and 57th position, respectively.

The Barona Collegiate Cup resumes on Tuesday with final-round action beginning at 7:15 a.m. PT. The Scarlet and Black are scheduled to tee off with golfers from Colorado State and New Mexico on the No. 1 hole, with the first Aztec slated to tee off at 8:03 a.m. PT.
