SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team split their doubleheader on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs began the day by upsetting No. 27 Minnesota, 5-2, before falling to Nevada by the same score of 5-2.
No.44 SDSU began doubles action with Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti defeating 48th-ranked Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicora in first doubles, 8-3. In second doubles Andre Feliz and Luis Rattenhuber would clinch the doubles point by downing Sebastian Gallego and Julian Dehn, 8-6. Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez would fight to complete the sweep in second doubles to defeat No. 80 Ishay Hadash and Phillip Arndt, 9-8 (6).
Feliz would keep the success alive by taking down Arndt in fourth singles, 7-5, 6-3. In third singles, Gomez could not hang on, falling to Gallego, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Tim Schulz van Endert would notch another point for San Diego State by picking up a decision over Dino Bilankov in sixth singles, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Ceban would battle to clinch the match for the Aztecs by downing No. 48 Hadash in first singles, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3). Golas tallied his second victory of the day by defeating Wernet in second singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Vaglietti split the match, falling to Julian Dehn in fifth singles, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
The Aztecs came out swinging and swept doubles action for the second time on the day. In second doubles, Gomez and Jordan Colman downed Augustin Myard and Benjamin David, 8-5. Ceban and Vaglietti defeated Laurent Garcin and Wessim Derbel, 8-3, in first doubles to clinch the point. In third doubles, Rattenhuber and Schulz van Endert would finish the sweep of doubles by taking Alex Daruty and Kristian Kuharszky, 8-5.
SDSU would not be so fortunate in singles action falling in five out of six matches. In sixth singles, Rattenhuber fell to Kuharszky, 6-2, 6-1. Vaglietti would pickup a victory in fourth singles by defeating David, 6-1, 6-0. Ceban could not finish off Garcin in first singles falling, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In third singles Daruty picked up a win over Feliz, 6-4, 6-4, while Derbel would defeat Golas by the same score in second singles. Schulz van Endert was unable to finish off Myard despite a strong effort, ultimately falling, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 1-0, (10).
San Diego State will travel to the Lonestar State to compete in the Rice Invitational beginning on March 20.
