DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Anna Gonzales scored four goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to help fifth-ranked San Diego State pull away to a 10-8 win over No. 12 UC Davis in non-conference water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 17-4 overall, while the Aggies drop to 15-7 for the season.

Gonzales was perfect during the game, scoring her four goals on four attempts. Freshman Kimmy Keach added two scores while juniors Melissa de Jonckheere and Danielle Pelke, sophomore Sarah Brady and freshman Hilary Whelan each chipped in one. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Campoli posted seven saves, including three against UC Davis 6-on-5 shots.

The Aggies took an early lead to the game, scoring in the opening minute when senior Sofia Patronas drew a five-meter exclusion and senior Lindsay Kiyama scored the ensuing penalty shot. Gonzales equalized with a five-meter conversion of her own at the 5:06 mark, but UC Davis regained the lead on the next possession with freshman Kaylee Miller's successful 6-on-5 attempt.

The Aztecs scored three straight goals to open second period play and craft a 4-2 lead, but UC Davis' Kiyama cut the lead to 4-3 with her man-up goal at 1:38. SDSU held on to a one-goal lead heading into the halftime break.

After intermission, the Scarlet and Black extended its advantage to 6-3 behind back-to-back goals from Keach. However, UC Davis rebounded with a pair of goals in the final 1:06 in the third frame, again cutting the deficit to a single goal.

With a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth, Gonzales scored at the 5:46 mark, then found the back of the net soon after the Aggie defense returned to even strength, extending the Aztec lead back to three. UC Davis never came closer than a two-goal margin after that point as SDSU went on to win the match, 10-8.

San Diego State returns to the pool Friday when it plays host to the Aztec Invitational, March 20-22, at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs will also play host to San Jose State in a MPSF matchup on Saturday, March 21, at 10:30 a.m.
