SAN DIEGO - Playing the final two games of the day, the San Diego State softball team defeated Oklahoma State, 1-0, then turned around and beat Northern Colorado, 5-3, on the second day of the San Diego Classic II at the SDSU Softball Field. With the win, the Aztecs improved to 16-11 as they won their fifth straight and seventh in their last eight contests.

In its first game of the day, San Diego needed a standout pitching performance as it could only muster a single run against Oklahoma State (18-6). The effort was provided by Samantha Beasley, who tossed the seven-inning shutout, allowing just a pair of hits while striking out 10 as she evened her record at 7-7.

The lone run in the game came in the fifth when Aztec designated player Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario reached on a bunt single and stole second. She then scored easily on a triple by teammate Brittany Knudsen. That made a loser of Cowgirl starter Anna Whiddon (5-3), who tossed a complete game and gave up the run on six hits while striking out six and walking none.

In the nightcap, SDSU was able to generate more offense led by first baseman Erin Floros, who got things going with a two-run homer in the third inning to stake her team to a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Aztecs doubled their advantage with a pair of runs that began on a leadoff triple by Stefanie Wisneski and sacrifice fly by Knudsen. Ensuing singles by Quichocho-Rosario and Floros plus an RBI ground out off the bat of Taryin Casillas made it a 4-0 game.

SDSU's final run came one frame later as Tonye McCorkle doubled and came home on base hit by Traci Wolf.

The Bears came back with a run in their half of the sixth off SDSU starter Bailey Micetich, who would eventually claim the victory to move her record to 9-4. However, that ended the Aztec freshman's run of 38 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Northern Colorado got to Micetich for two more runs with Kelli Henderson's double driving in a pair of runs with two outs to close the gap to 5-3. That hit deprived Micetich of a complete game as she gave way to Brittany Beasley, who struck out Amanda Hensley to end the game and pick up her third save of the season. Courtney Maihi, the Bears' starter, was charged with four of the five Aztec runs and took the loss to drop to 1-2.

San Diego State continues tournament play on Saturday (March 14) when it faces New Mexico State at 2:00 p.m. followed by a contest against Iowa State at 4:30 p.m.
