SAN DIEGO - SDSU women's tennis was able to pull out a victory Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center over No. 35 Sacramento State. San Diego State would take the doubles point and take four singles matches in the 5-2 victory.
Kathryn Kitts and Esther Cadua fell to Joyce Martinez Gutierrez and Clarisse Baca, 8-4, in first doubles. The Ellison sisters defeated Maria Meliuk and Aileen Tsan, 8-6, in second doubles. Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk clinched the doubles point by taking a win over Melissa Valenzuela and Milica Zivanovic, 8-5, in first doubles. With the victory Bagshaw and Trunk improve their doubles record to 8-1.
As SDSU had the early lead, the Hornets came out fighting. Baca was able to defeat Milana Yusupov, 6-2, 6-2, in fourth singles. Trunk took Tsan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in first singles to take back the lead for San Diego State. In sixth singles, Olivia Colman downed Milica Zivanovic, also in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Despite putting up a strong effort, Cadua fell in fifth singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, in fifth singles.
In an ultimate showcase of heart, Bagshaw clinched the victory for the Aztecs by defeating Luba Schifris, 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (5). In the second singles match Bagshaw came back from injury to not only win the tie-breaking set but also clinched the victory for her team. Freshman Emma Cioffi would complete the victory for SDSU by picking up a decision against Meliuk, 7-5, 5-7, 5-5 ret., in third singles.
With the win, San Diego State is now 7-3 on the season. The Aztecs will next travel to Los Angeles to face Loyola Marymount on March 7.
