SDSU Softball Heads to No. 5/6 Stanford for Louisville Slugger Classic
The San Diego State softball team will look to continue its winning ways this weekend when it heads to the Bay Area for the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic in Palo Alto, Calif. The Aztecs (9-9), who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll after going 4-1 last week, including a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten No. 12/14 Missouri, will play five games in the six-team tournament.
SDSU will kick off its busy week Friday with a pair of games against Illinois State (9 a.m.) and Vermont (11:15 a.m.). San Diego State will then meet UC Davis at 9 a.m. Saturday, before the marquee game against the No. 5/6 Cardinal at 1:30 p.m. The Aztecs will conclude its play in the Classic at 9 a.m. Sunday with a solo game versus Penn State.
SDSU nearly made it a sweep over nationally ranked foes last Saturday, but couldn't overcome a early deficit in a 4-3 loss to No. 3/4 UCLA. Of the Aztecs' nine losses this season, seven have come against nationally ranked opponents, including four against 2008 Women's College World Series opponents. The losses to ranked opponents include then No. 4/4 UCLA, No. 10/7 Washington, No. 8/8 Stanford, rv/No. 24 Long Beach State, No. 20/18 Louisiana-Lafayette (twice) and the No. 3/4 Bruins once again on Saturday. Three of SDSU's Pac-10 opponents are now ranked in the top five in at least one of the two polls, including Washington's first-ever No. 1 ranking by ESPN.com/USA Softball.
The road doesn't get any easier this weekend, as the Aztecs, who are 1-4 against Pac-10 teams this year after going 4-3 in 2008, will play the host Cardinal on Saturday, a team they lost to earlier this year by a 9-2 score.
San Diego State is 0-1 all-time against Illinois State, 3-0 versus UC Davis, 10-9 against Stanford and 4-0 versus Penn State. SDSU and Vermont have never met.
