SAN DIEGO - After leading the Aztecs to a 2-0 record last week, San Diego State junior guard Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the third consecutive week in which an SDSU player has been honored and it is also the third such award for Morris in 2008-09.
In victories at BYU last Wednesday and against TCU on Saturday, Morris averaged a team-high 18.5 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists. She has posted double-figures in points in five straight games and in nine of the last 10.
Morris had a game-high 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting in the team's first win at BYU since 1995. She followed that up with a huge performance against second-place TCU, scoring 19 of her game-high 21 points in the second half by shooting 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the field. Morris tallied seven steals against the Lady Frogs, the most by a player in a league game this season, and blocked TCU's final shot attempt in the 68-63 victory.
The San Francisco, Calif., native helped the Aztecs complete just their second undefeated home campaign in program history (14-0) and SDSU earned its first 20-win season since 1996-97.
This is the eighth time in 16 weeks that a San Diego State player has been honored, with Paris Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) being tabbed four times, Morris chosen three times and Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) selected once.
San Diego State, which is just a game out of first place, will complete the Mountain West Conference regular season this week with two road games on Wednesday at Colorado State and on Saturday at UNLV. The Aztecs have already secured their highest ever MWC regular-season finish.
