AZTECS TO HOST TWO MATCHES THIS WEEK
The San Diego State women's tennis team will take on the Pepperdine Waves on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and the Long Beach State 49ers Friday, Feb. 13, both days at 2 p.m. PT. The Aztecs will be looking to add to the win column as they are 4-1 on the season. The Aztecs' last outing came against California on Friday where San Diego State dropped its first match of the season to the second-ranked Golden Bears, 6- 1.
SCOUTING THE WAVES
Pepperdine is coming off a 5-2 loss to UCLA on Feb. 4 at the Ralph-Straus Tennis Center. The 41stranked Waves are 2-3 on the season. Gualberto Escudero is in his 32nd year at the helm of the Pepperdine tennis team. Escudero has accumulated a 563-274 career record during his tenure with the Waves.
SERIES HISTORY VS. PEPPERDINE
San Diego State has taken 18 of the meetings between the two schools. Most recently, Pepperdine defeated the Aztecs, 7-0, during the 2008 campaign.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Long Beach State is coming off a loss to Florida Interantional, 4-3, at the Rhodes Tennis Center in Long Beach, Calif. With the loss on Saturday, the 49ers are 1-3 on the season. No. 42 Long Beach has one ranked player in senior, 68th-ranked Hannah Grady. Grady is 2-2 on the season in first singles. Jenny Hilt-Costello is in her 11th year as head coach of Long Beach State.
SERIES HISTORY VS. LONG BEACH
San Diego State has the 49ers number as the Aztecs are 27-3 all-time against their neighbor to the north. Last season Long Beach picked up a decision against SDSU, 7-0.
AZTECS IN THE POLLS
San Diego State enters the 2009 campaign unranked in the nation according to the first FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released Feb. 3 by the Intercollegiate Collegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Sophomore Julia Trunk leads the team as the only nationally ranked player. Trunk is currently No. 93 in women's singles.
THE COACHES
Peter Mattera is in his 28th season at San Diego State and 16th as head coach of the Scarlet and Black. In 15 seasons, the Aztecs' mentor has guided SDSU to 10 postseason appearances, compiling a record of 232-160 (.593) in the process. Equally impressive is the fact that 13 of his 15 squads have finished with an overall record of .500 or better despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation on an annual basis. Lindsey Gamp is in her fourth season as the Aztecs' assistant coach. A four-year letterwinner at SDSU (2000-03), Gamp played on three NCAA tournament teams and guided the Aztecs to a pair of Mountain West Conference regular season titles and a MWC championship crown in 2003.
FALL HIGHLIGHTS
San Diego State had many outstanding individual performances during the fall season. Freshman Sierra Ellison made an impressive run during the SDSU Fall Classic II by reaching the championship final and claiming the Singles - C title.
2007-08 REVIEW
SDSU finished the 2008 dual-match campaign with a 11-13 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Since the opening of the Aztec Tennis Center in 2005, SDSU has won 68 percent of its home matches, posting a 35-15 record. All 14 defeats have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 60.
LAST TIME OUT WITH THE AZTECS
San Diego State hosted the California Golden Bears on Friday, Feb. 6. Despite taking the doubles point from No. 2 Cal, the Aztecs were unable to come out on top, falling 6-1.
