SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis dropped a decision against No. 6 USC but ended the day by defeating UC Riverside. In a day that was filled with anticipation and excitement the Aztecs were unable to overcome to Trojans ultimately falling, 6-0.
Due to weather, doubles action was eliminated from the day leaving singles action to decide the final score. Freshman Giovanni Vaglietti was the first Aztec to fall dropping a decision to No. 58 Steve Johnson, 6-2, 6-2, in third singles. In fourth singles, Tim Schulz van Endert was defeated by 64th-ranked Abdullah Magdas, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Luis Rattenhuber was the next to go down falling to Jason McNaughton in sixth singles, 6-0, 6-3.
In fifth singles, and the match that would clinch the win for the Trojans, Andre Feliz dropped a decision to 54th-ranked Matt Kecki, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Despite putting up a good fight against Jaak Poldma, Aztec Achim Ceban lost, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1. In the longest and toughest fight of the day Juan Gomez ultimately fell to No. 7 Robert Farah in first singles, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (5).
Shortly after facing USC, San Diego State took on UC Riverside in the second match of the home opening doubleheader. With singles action getting underway first due to the threat of rain, the Aztecs came out fighting.
Feliz defeated Ranier Matias in fifth singles as Rattenhuber downed Austin Andres in sixth singles, both by the same score of 6-2, 6-3. SDSU's Bartosz Golas saw his first action of the day by taking down Feliz Macherez in second singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Gomez was able to take Gorjan Kovacevic in first singles while in Vaglietti took care of John Park in third singles, both by the identical score of 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action Rattenhuber/Vaglietti were able to take their second wins of the day by defeating Doan/Macha, 8-5, in first doubles. In second doubles, Golas/Schulz van Endert picked up the decision against Andres/Conroy, 8-1. Completing the victory for the Aztecs was Tosches/Colman downing Chai/Park, 8-6, in third doubles.
San Diego State will next travel to Chicago for the National Team Indoor Championships beginning Feb. 13.
