AZTECS TO HOST CALIFORNIA FRIDAY
The San Diego State women's tennis team will face the California Golden Bears on Friday at 2 p.m. The Aztecs will be looking to extend their winning record after opening the season 4- 0. The Aztecs' most recent victory came against UC Irvine in Honolulu where San Diego State picked up the decision, 5-2.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
Cal is coming off a win over Washington, 5-2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. With the victory on Sunday, the Bears improve to 2-0 on the season. No. 2 California boasts four ranked players including three returners. Sophomore Marina Cossou is the Bears highest-ranked player at No. 13 and is at 1-1 for the season. No. 15 senior Bojana Bobusic is 2-0 while fellow senior Claire Ilcinkas is also 2-0. Freshman Jana Juricova has started her collegiate career ranked No. 52. Amanda Augustus is in her second year as head coach of the Berkeley women's tennis team after taking over for her former coach, Jan Brogan, who retired after 29 years at the helm in 2007.
SERIES HISTORY VS. CALIFORNIA
San Diego State has defeated the Golden Bears six times when the two schools have faced each other. Cal has been on a roll taking the last 13 meetings since 1994.
AZTECS IN THE POLLS
San Diego State enters the 2009 campaign unranked in the nation according to the first FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released Feb. 3 by the Intercollegiate Collegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Sophomore Julia Trunk leads the team as the only nationally ranked player. Trunk is currently No. 93 in women's singles.
THE COACHES
Peter Mattera is in his 28th season at San Diego State and 16th as head coach of the Scarlet and Black. In 15 seasons, the Aztecs' mentor has guided SDSU to 10 postseason appearances, compiling a record of 232-159 (.593) in the process. Equally impressive is the fact that 13 of his 15 squads have finished with an overall record of .500 or better despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation on an annual basis. Lindsey Gamp is in her fourth season as the Aztecs' assistant coach. A four-year letterwinner at SDSU (2000-03), Gamp played on three NCAA tournament teams and guided the Aztecs to a pair of Mountain West Conference regular season titles and a MWC championship crown in 2003.
FALL HIGHLIGHTS
San Diego State had many outstanding individual performances during the fall season. Freshman Sierra Ellison made an impressive run during the SDSU Fall Classic II by reaching the championship final and claiming the Singles - C title.
2007-08 REVIEW
SDSU finished the 2008 dual-match campaign with a 11-13 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Since the opening of the Aztec Tennis Center in 2005, SDSU has won 68 percent of its home matches, posting a 35-14 record. All 14 defeats have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top 60.
LAST TIME OUT WITH THE AZTECS
San Diego State traveled to Honolulu to take on Hawai'i and UC Irvine last week. The Aztecs defeated Hawai'i, 4-3, on Jan. 29. SDSU also took down UC Irvine defeating the Anteaters 5- 2.
