The San Diego State softball team picked up a split against two nationally ranked teams Saturday night at the San Diego Classic I at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (8-9) opened the night with a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten No. 12/14 Missouri, before falling to No. 4/3 UCLA, 4-3, in the late game.

In the first game, SDSU banged out a season-high 11 hits in a 4-2 win in eight innings over the Tigers (12-1).

With the game tied at 2-2 after seven innings, the international tiebreaker rule came into effect and sophomore Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) was placed at second base. Following a sacrifice bunt by junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS), redshirt senior Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) singled up the middle to plate Wisneski with the eventual game-winning run. Three batters later, Sidoti scored on a single down the left field line by sophomore Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) for the insurance run.

Sophomore Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), who was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, kept Missouri in check over the final frame and, despite the international tiebreaker rule, did not allow a runner past second base.

Camello had three hits and scored a run to lead the offense, while Sidoti was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) and freshman Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) each added two hits apiece.

Beasley (5-5) earned the win after allowing just two hits and two runs (one earned) over 4 1/3 inning of relief. She struck out five and walked three, while leaving nine Tigers on base, including bases loaded situations in the fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) started the game and went 3 2/3 innings without giving up a run. She stuck out two, and allowed three hits and two walks.

In the nightcap, San Diego State rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth, but never threatened after in a 4-3 loss to the Bruins (17-2), who won their 12th straight contest.

The big inning started when senior Taryin Casillas (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont HS) led off with a pinch-hit double down the left field line to break Donna Kerr's no-hit bid. After Camello drew a seven-pitch walk, redshirt junior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) laced a triple through the right field gap and scored on an overthrow by the UCLA right fielder.

After redshirt junior Sydney Fleming (Oakland, Calif.) was hit by a pitch and was replaced at first by sophomore Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.), senior Christine Kulick (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) laid down a perfect bunt against relief pitcher Megan Langenfeld. On the play, however, Wolf was thrown out at third trying to put two runners in scoring position. Wisneski moved Kulick to third on a groundout to second base, but Langenfeld got Knudsen to strike out swinging to end the inning.

No Aztec would get on the base the final two innings as Langenfeld struck out three to earn the save.

Beasley took the loss after giving up four runs on just five hits over seven innings. She struck out six and issued four walks.

SDSU will wrap up its play in the San Diego Classic I on Sunday when it hosts Santa Clara at 4:30 p.m.
