MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team won two of its four events at the Parker Cup Regatta on Saturday morning on the shores of La Ballona Creek in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The second varsity eight and novice eight boats each came out on top in the three-team spring opener.

In the second varsity eight race, the Aztec boat, consisting of Tanya Ochoa (cox), Alyson Boyd (stroke), Alanna Call (seven), Christina Mattos (six), Kristin Guissanie (five), Melissa Carey (four), Stefanie Krach (three), Ashley Kohler (two), Jenna Wood (bow), completed the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 3.3 seconds, almost 10 seconds better than runner-up Loyola Marymount (7:12.0).

"Our (second varsity eight) boat came out of the blocks solid and pretty much was in the lead the whole race," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "They had a solid and consistent race and stuck with the plan."

In the novice eight race, San Diego State's `A' boat of Caroline Trawick (cox), Julie Moyer (stroke), Kristin Ingram (seven), Laurel Stephens (six), Hillary Beard (five), Debbie Schweer (four), Leslie Martz (three), Darian Kimball (two) and Ali Schroeder (bow), won the three-boat race in a time of 7:11.8, easily outdistancing second-place UC Irvine (7:19.6). SDSU's `B' boat was third in 7:26.0.

"We were happy with the novice eights today," Zebroski said. "The first novice eights came off the line well and had the lead the whole race, and ended up with a little bit of open water. Our second novice eight boat was fighting with UC Irvine for most of the race."

In varsity eight action, the Aztecs were narrowly edged for first place by Loyola Marymount (6:52.2-6:53.9) in race where UC Irvine was third in 7:19.4

"We had a strong and consistent race," Zebroski said. "We were being outstroked a little bit, but we really picked it up in the end."

San Diego State also competed in the varsity four race, but finished third of three boats with a time of 8:09.0. UC Irvine won the race, while Loyola Marymount was second in 7:50.6.

"We came off the line and were sandwiched between (UCI and LMU)," Zebroski said. "I thought we could have had a better race with more intensity for the drive."

"For our first race of the season, I thought we did well," Zebroski said. "We need to work on our speed, especially in the varsity eight, but overall we were pleased with our effort."

SDSU will be back in the water on March 7 when it travels to the Port of Los Angeles for a dual race with USC.
