LAFAYETTE, La. -
The San Diego State softball team fell to No. 20/18 Louisiana, 5-0, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the fifth annual Mardi Gras Classic in Lafayette, La. The Aztecs dropped to 5-8 on the season, while the Ragin' Cajuns improved to 10-2 after going 4-0 in the Classic.
SDSU, playing its fourth straight contest without senior All-American Erin Floros, managed just two hits against Louisiana pitcher Donna Bourgeois (8-1). Bourgeois allowed just the two hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out six.
Junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) doubled to lead off the game and reached on a walk, while senior Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) had San Diego State's other hit.
Aztec freshman Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) (2-4) was saddled with the loss after scattering five runs (three earned) on a season-high 11 hits and a walk. She struck out four over seven frames.
Louisiana got its first two runs in the top of the third inning when, with one out, it loaded the bases with three consecutive infield singles. Melissa Verde then came through with a single up the middle to plate Vallie Gaspard and Katie Smith.
The Ragin' Cajuns struck again in the fourth as Gaspard's single to centerfield scored Kelly Cormier form second base.
A solo homer by Jessica Dupont in the sixth and an RBI single by Codi Runyan in the seventh accounted for the rest of Louisiana's runs.
San Diego State will look to get back on the winning track when it plays host to San Diego on Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT.
