LAFAYETTE, La. -
The San Diego State softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 20/18 Louisiana Saturday afternoon at the Mardi Gras Classic in Lafayette, La.. The Aztecs' (5-7) game against UConn scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT was canceled due to rain.
Sophomore Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) pitched well for SDSU in the defeat, but the offense couldn't help her out as it was held hitless by Ragin' Cajuns' pitcher Ashley Brignac. Brignac, who is on the 2009 USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List, struck out eight and walked three for her fourth career no-hitter.
Beasley, who threw a one-hitter on Friday in San Diego State's 2-0 victory over Connecticut, allowed one run on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out two and walked a season-high seven batters, including one to Gabriele Bridges with the bases loaded in the third inning which scored Katie Smith with the only run of the game. Freshman Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) relieved Beasley with one out in the seventh and retired the final two batters, including a strikeout against Christi Orgeron to end the inning.
Sophomore Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.) walked twice for the Aztecs, while junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) drew a walk and stole two bases.
SDSU wraps up its play in the Mardi Gras Classic on Sunday with a rematch against Louisiana, beginning at 11:30 a.m. CT.
